This podcast chronicles the evolution of Nireus as a band, from early experiments with Buchla and viola, to harmonic complexities inspired by the 2nd Viennese school.

We explore cinematic pan-triadic writing at the end, which Anton calls lullaby. Clara objects to this interpretation because she was thinking of Korngold’s “Die Tote Stadt” while playing, but we're happy to disagree.

We also included a live solo performance of Anton at the Echo Garden nursery near Los Angeles. In the recording you can hear the live street as well as local participants from the SoCal synth community (and their children). During the performance, the audience likened it to the next Dune soundtrack, evoking feelings of vast open spaces.

Nireus is violist / researcher T. Clara Takarabe @bergamotclara and composer / synthesist / multi-instrumentalist H. Anton Riehl

Nireus’s broad musical style is influenced by their shared history in classical music, with deep ties to electronic and experimental music. You can hear influences from Palestrina to Shostakovich, Penderecki to Tan Dun, or the music of the medieval Andalusia running through their cinematic expressions.
